Delimitation of Municipalities: State Election commission is the creation of the Indian Constitution (Seventy Third and Seventy Fourth) Amendment Act, 1992. The State Election commission of Sikkim was constituted on 16.9.1996 as an independent constitutional body and is vested the responsibility for superintendence, direction and control of preparation of electoral rolls and conduct of elections to local bodies in a free and fair manner.
The State Government notified seven towns of Gangtok, Singtam, Rangpo, Namchi, Jorethang, Gyalshing and Mangan as Municipal areas and vide Notification No. 40/DMN/UD&HD/09-10/3131 dated 22.8.2009. A detailed break up of Municipal towns and formation of wards is given at Annexture I.
