Introduction: State Election commission is the creation of the Indian Constitution (Seventy Third and Seventy Fourth) Amendment Act, 1992. The State Election commission of Sikkim was constituted on 16.9.1996 as an independent constitutional body and is vested the responsibility for superintendence, direction and control of preparation of electoral rolls and conduct of elections to local bodies in a free and fair manner.
Under the Sikkim Municipalities Act, 2007 there are provisions to specify such area to be a larger urban or a smaller urban area is transition from a rural area to an urban area and to constitute Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat depending on the size of population with the minimum and maximum number of councillors to be elected. There are also provisions regarding number of wards into which a town has to be demarcated.
